Choosing the Right Images and Graphics for Your Website

Designing a small business website is not a small order.  There are many different components to consider, from site architecture to content to design.  When you embark upon creating a website, it is important all things are considered equally.  Because focusing on just one part of your website would cause problems that could be detrimental to your business.

For the sake of this article, we will be focusing on design aspects of your website.  To be specific, we will be discussing images and graphics.  Many new designers aren’t aware of the plethora of free images on the web.  Many new web designers are also not aware of other resources they could (and should) be using for their website’s images.

Best Sites for Professional Images and Graphics

Unsplash

Unsplash is a huge site where people can download free high-resolution stock photos.  I’ve used unsplash for many different websites.  The images are high quality, beautiful and very professional.  The images are also categorized well and there’s a large selection of photos in the unsplash database.

Keep in mind however, the images must be optimized before being added to your.  Putting these images on your site as is could cause it to become very slow.  And that wouldn’t be good for user experience.  Resizing the images and optimizing them for web is a must.  But this can be easily done with a few simple plugins or photoshop.

Canva

Canva is an excellent site where you can create infographics, images and other design elements for your website or other marketing materials.  Canva offers a free 30-day trial, which is also very smart as you can try out the site and see if it is a fit.  The price for an upgraded membership is somewhere around $12/month.

Canva is great for infographics.  You can design excellent infographics that illustrate any concept and that look professionally done.

The website is very easy to use, even if you aren’t very creative.  There are also many Youtube tutorials that you can view that will help you design something perfect.  You can edit templates or build your own designs from scratch.   Designs can be downloaded in jpeg or png format.

Pexels

Pexels is another great site for free stock photos and videos.  It’s very similar to Unsplash, and the quality of images is excellent.  The Pexels database has a large number of images and videos to choose from for your digital marketing efforts.

I personally prefer using Pexels, as I noticed that the images are categorized better than on Unsplash.  I’ve also noticed that they have a larger selection of free stock videos to choose from. But nonetheless, both sites are great.

Tips to Keep in Mind When Choosing Images

When you are choosing (or creating) images, videos or infographics for a website, there are things you should consider.  Here are a few of those things below!

Website Style

Be sure the media compliments the style of your website’s overall design.   This is something you should think about beforehand.  You also need to make sure the graphics on your site compliment your logo.  These are very important things people often neglect to do.

Images that Compliment

In addition to this, you want the design elements on your website to stand out, yet not overpower the site.

Hire Professionals

Hiring a professional web design agency, such as Bizmap LLC , is a very good idea if your website is representing your full time job.   A business website is often something that should in fact be done by professionals.  Neglecting to do so could jeopardize your credibility.

Image Optimization

Optimizing the images is also essential (as previously stated).  Using alt tags, resizing the images and properly naming the image files is very important.  In addition, your images should also be responsive and look good on mobile, tablet and desktop.

Once you have followed these guidelines, you are well on your way to having yourself a professional website.  Keep this information in mind when choosing graphics and designs for your business website, and you will find yourself with an attractive and extremely professional looking site.
